Epic ships 'vibe coded' games launcher preview with Linux support
Epic's rebuilt Epic Games Launcher enters preview on Windows, Mac and Linux, built with AI and claiming faster startup than Steam.
CRUNCHY TECH
YESTERDAY, STILL WORTH KNOWING
Epic bet the launcher on AI-written code while the IMF tallied the bill for the wider AI boom, and browsers, weather models and streaming apps all shipped quieter fixes.
Epic Games has previewed a rebuilt games launcher for Windows, Mac and Linux that it cheerfully admits was vibe coded, meaning generated by AI tools rather than written by hand. AI agents wrote and reviewed all the code, with staff supervising, and Epic claims a cold start of 5.47 seconds, 46% faster than Steam on Keywords Studios testing across 13 Windows machines. The preview is deliberately sparse, described as a speedboat rather than a yacht, and Unreal Engine developers plus competitive Fortnite and Rocket League players are told to stay on the old launcher until the new one reaches feature parity.
The timing is telling. It lands a day after Tim Sweeney announced a pivot to retool developers for maximum AI acceleration, and after a Bloomberg report that staff on an unannounced Disney title were told there would be no more hand-written code. The rebuild itself has been promised since February, when Epic's own store leadership called the current launcher slow, though the AI angle went unmentioned at Unreal Fest in June. The Linux support also sets up bringing Fortnite to the platform through the app.
The IMF's latest Global Financial Stability Report models an AI sector correction cutting global GDP by 0.4% by 2028, with investment down 1.3% and consumption down 0.6%, and warns heavy leverage could make the real shock worse. Its sharpest point is circularity: since 2023, $300 billion has flowed to financially weaker AI companies mostly from hyperscalers, alongside $650 billion in debt, together tied to $1.4 trillion in revenue from services and chip orders, all concentrated in a handful of firms.
The plumbing looks fragile too. Single stocks now make up 28% of leveraged ETFs, so a sharp drop could force selling and feed on itself, while hyperscalers have grown to 10% of investment-grade bond issuance from under 1% in 2024. The Fund still expects banks to stay resilient even against a combined energy, inflation and AI correction.
Microsoft's Probabilistic Bias Correction, published in Nature and open-sourced, uses machine learning to fix systematic bias in existing weather models rather than build a new one, improving ECMWF forecasts for 98% of precipitation and 92% of temperature targets two to six weeks out. It runs on CPUs alone, and trials with the Kenya Meteorological Service are underway. Apple researchers, meanwhile, described Minions, a virtual GPU cloud of idle Macs that cut AI job waits from over ten hours to minutes, echoing SETI@home, though confidentiality worries persist. Google DeepMind and Singapore have built an on-device Gemma-based scam detector trained on local scam conversations, which cost the country over S$4 billion since 2019.
Elsewhere, Deezer is building a toggle to hide AI-generated music, which now exceeds half of its 90,000 daily uploads, following Bandcamp's outright ban and Tidal cutting monetisation. Chrome 155 and Firefox 158 patched 114 flaws between them, with 15 Chrome bugs reported by Anthropic's Xinyang Ge using Claude, and Mozilla launched Firefox Enterprise for regulated organisations.
