THE CRUNCH

Alienware is actively testing a firmware update for the AW3926QW that will allow users to disable Convex Power Control (CPC), a feature responsible for the monitor's poor luminance uniformity. The company confirmed to TFTCentral that it wants to understand the full customer experience implications before enabling the toggle, with a deployment expected 'soon'.

CPC is a burn-in protection mechanism that dims the screen's edges while leaving the centre untouched, a design choice that has led to brightness deviations of up to 21% from the centre of the panel. This differs from competitors like Gigabyte, which offer a controllable 'corner dim' option via the on-screen display. Once the toggle is enabled, the monitor should easily meet the five-star standard required for an Editor's Choice award.

Alienware isn't the first monitor maker to use such a feature, but the lack of user control on the AW3926QW has been a notable weak point. The firm's approach of waiting to fully understand customer experience implications before enabling the feature suggests a cautious rollout strategy.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Alienware will deploy the firmware update 'soon' once it understands the full customer experience implications.
