THE CRUNCH
AMD is reportedly developing a DLSS 5-like neural rendering feature for its next-gen RDNA 5 GPUs, according to a well-known leaker. The feature, dubbed 'Neural Lighting', is said to be computationally heavy and likely exclusive to RDNA 5 hardware. AMD has not officially confirmed RDNA 5, with launch estimates ranging from mid-2027 to early 2028.
The rumoured feature is described as a version of 'Neural Lighting' comparable to DLSS 5, which uses AI to enhance game graphics. The leaker suggests AMD's approach should differ from NVIDIA's by giving the model direct access to raw game data like geometry and depth buffers. This could potentially reduce 'AI slop' and improve accuracy by splitting lighting and shading into separate models.
AMD is expected to introduce more dedicated AI hardware and architectural changes optimised for deep learning in RDNA 5. This could boost the performance of the new Neural Lighting feature. The leaker also noted that older-generation GPUs may be unfit for the task due to its heavy processing requirements.
