THE CRUNCH

Capcom plans to expand AI-assisted development within its RE Engine through the REX project. Programmer Satoshi Ishida discussed the REX initiative at Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026, describing tools intended to reduce the time involved in large-scale game production.

According to Video Games Chronicle, reporting the presentation via GameBiz, the planned changes include making code easier for AI to understand, generating programs and running automated test plays to identify bugs. Capcom also intends to publish some technologies for use in AI training. These are development plans, not demonstrated results or a released replacement engine.

The Verge covers the same presentation and its focus on incorporating AI into development workflows. VGC also cites earlier comments from Capcom executive Shinichi Inoue that the company was not using AI to generate art. That qualification does not rule out other forms of AI-assisted development.
