THE CRUNCH
Elon Musk's SpaceXAI is nearing its goal of operating 1.44 million GPUs by the end of the year, according to reports. The Colossus supercomputer is adding 660,000 units, including Nvidia GB300 chips, to reach the total. The expansion is powered by a new 1.2-gigawatt power plant, which Musk says will fully come online this year.
The Colossus 2 site, which uses Blackwell GPUs, is set to add 660,000 units this year, bringing the total to 1.44 million, the report states. Musk said on X that 220,000 GB300 GPUs will be operational next week, with another 220,000 coming online in November, and a final 220,000 by late December if the schedule holds. This brings SpaceXAI’s GB300 count to 1.1 million units, with the total GPU tally reaching 1.44 million.
The company is reportedly renting out Colossus 1, which houses older Hopper and Blackwell GPUs, to Anthropic for inference. This move is intended to address the inefficiency of the older site for training Grok. The expansion is being powered by a new 1.2-gigawatt power plant, which Musk says will fully come online this year. The plant is intended to resolve power issues that have led to controversies with the surrounding neighborhood.
Musk has said that the 1-million-GPU target is just the beginning, with plans to grow data center capacity sevenfold by 2027. He has even set an ambitious goal of 50 million H100-equivalent GPUs by 2030. The report notes that SpaceX is also planning an Orbital Data Center System with a million satellites, though Nvidia's Jensen Huang has called this a 'dream' for now.
