THE CRUNCH

Framework has announced the end of its One Key Module project, a programme designed to let developers create customisable laptop keyboards. The company cited manufacturing complexity and yield issues as the reason for the cancellation. Framework and its partner Lite-On struggled to reduce material and assembly costs to a level that would allow for high-volume sales.

Framework launched the One Key Module project alongside the Laptop 16 2nd-gen to build an ecosystem for custom keyboard layouts. The initiative aimed to support both tinkerers and commercial products. However, the programme has now been discontinued.

The decision was driven by economic challenges. Framework stated that the per-key costs resulted in breakeven pricing that was too high for reasonable sales volumes. The company also noted that neither it nor its suppliers could justify the overhead of manufacturing such a complex product at low volumes.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

The One Key Module programme will cease operations, and the project will no longer be supported.
