THE CRUNCH
General Motors is overhauling the software in its bestselling trucks to make it safer and easier to use Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The company is adding picture-in-picture displays for phone mirroring and improving the graphics for driver-assist systems on the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and 2027 GMC Sierra 1500.
The update aims to cut down on the dangerous tapping and swiping drivers have to do to reach common controls. The new interface will feature slicker graphics for the advanced driver-assist system and animated transitions between screens. This move is a notable shift for GM, which has previously expressed hostility towards phone mirroring in its electric vehicles.
The changes are set to arrive on the next-generation Silverado and Sierra later this year. By integrating phone displays more directly into the dashboard, GM is trying to reduce the distraction of switching between the vehicle's native system and a smartphone.
