Only engineers at Goldman Sachs can still use advanced AI coding tools such as Anthropic's Claude Code and Microsoft's GitHub, after the bank withdrew access from most of its workforce, Bloomberg reports, drawing on internal rules dated October. Before the change, staff in trading and banking roles had relied on the tools for months, including to track trading flows and produce content, and the withdrawal is said to have stirred discontent within the bank.

The about-face is notable because the bank had previously championed the opposite approach. In July, chief information officer Marco Argenti spoke favourably in an interview about "vibe coding" among staff without technical backgrounds, sketching a workflow in which a trader or asset management employee would sketch a quick AI prototype and pass it to engineers to build out for production. That arrangement now appears abandoned.

As for the reason, Bloomberg's report offers no detailed explanation, quoting only "a variety of factors including productivity and risk management" from Goldman spokesperson Nick Carcaterra. He went on to say the experimental stage had ended and access was being narrowed to those "who are best suited to leverage them for the long term".
