THE CRUNCH

Google is upgrading the Gemini assistant in cars with Personal Intelligence, a feature that lets the assistant draw on your Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube and Search activity to tailor answers while you drive. It arrives in Android Auto today and reaches cars with Google built-in in the coming months.

The practical upshot is that Gemini can connect dots across your Google apps. Google's examples include asking for your flight gate and whether it is still on time in one go, with the assistant pulling flight details from a Gmail confirmation, or saying "take me to my doctor's appointment" instead of typing in an address. You can even ask it to find a car wash from a photo you took last week and navigate there.

None of this happens by default. Google says apps are only connected if you enable the Personal Intelligence setting, and personalised responses require your phone to be connected to the car. You can switch the feature off at any time, pick which apps to link, and everything in the car still works without it, just without the tailored answers.

Gemini first arrived in Android Auto last November and reached cars with Google built-in in April. Carmakers including Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, Volvo and Polestar ship newer models with Google built-in, which runs Android apps natively on the dashboard.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Support for cars with Google built-in is due in the coming months; Android Auto users get the setting from today.
