THE CRUNCH
Intel has added support for the 'Crescent Island' Xe3P GPU to its Media Driver in the 2026Q3 release. The GPU is designed as a 350 W, air-cooled, PCIe format card featuring 32 Xe3P cores, 256 XMX engines, 32 MB of unified L2 cache, and up to 480 GB of LPDDR5X memory. The driver enables video acceleration, including AV1 decode, for workstations.
The driver update confirms that 'Crescent Island' will support video acceleration, including video editing, decoding, encoding, and processing. This capability was initially believed to be exclusive to AI inference, but Intel is now bringing media processing features to the platform. The card is expected to offer similar video standards support as seen in 'Panther Lake' and the upcoming 'Nova Lake' integrated graphics.
The Xe3P silicon for 'Crescent Island' has no graphics processing elements to output imagery, as the silicon is designed purely for AI inference workloads that include long context, agentic tasks. However, being part of the media kit suggests Intel sees this GPU as acceleration-only, dedicating 3D output to another GPU, or there may be a version with 3D graphics output. The company has yet to reveal how many SKUs will be released and whether any will include 3D video output capability.
