Level 5’s CEO has apologised after admitting that generative AI was used to make footage for new Professor Layton and Yo-Kai Watch titles look more spectacular. The studio faced criticism on social media for inconsistencies in the game reveals, with one fan noting that the new backgrounds looked very different from the originals. CEO Akihiro Hino explained that the AI was used to digitise creative work and convert it
into polygons, but insisted that no simplistic AI-generated output is included in the final games. He added that the use of AI was intended to shorten the development period for major titles from five years to two, though he acknowledged that the experiment went too far this time.
