THE CRUNCH

Valve's Steam client beta has finally brought a 64-bit client to Linux, which had remained 32-bit even as the rest of Steam moved to 64-bit. The same beta introduces achievement sets, a new way for developers to organise game achievements.

Achievement sets let developers split achievements into groups, such as separating a base game's list from DLC achievements. Each set gets its own progress bar, and completing one earns a "set complete" trophy visible on your profile. Valve also plans support for seasonal sets that developers can archive, which it suggests could suit season-based games or time-limited holiday achievements. A refreshed achievements page will show overall progress, progress within each set and details on individual achievements.

The 64-bit Linux client follows the beta RT3 client announced earlier in 2026, which began the transition and promised a more consistent experience across Linux distributions. Ahead of this beta, Valve also shipped a mainline Steam client update with significantly faster cold-start times, a move that followed Epic Games's new Epic Games Launcher beta.
