THE CRUNCH

Microsoft is retiring the Calendar, People and Files companion apps it added to the Windows 11 taskbar in early 2025. The company says the apps will stop working on December 16, 2026, after failing to gain traction. The apps were WebView2 wrappers that pulled data from the main 365 suite but added an extra layer of complexity.

The apps were designed to provide quick access to people, files and calendar events directly from the taskbar. Microsoft tried to install them automatically on many PCs and even pinned them to the taskbar for users. However, the company is leaving users to remove the apps manually after the deadline passes.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Users will need to manually remove the companion apps after December 16, 2026.
