THE CRUNCH

Microsoft has added dark mode to Hyper-V Manager, the built-in Windows 11 tool for managing virtual machines. The app runs on the Win32 API, a graphics layer that predates Windows 11 by many years, and it now mostly renders in a darker theme.

The rollout is uneven, though. Testing by Windows Latest found that the main management view and the virtual machine listing still appear in light mode, while Hyper-V Quick Create Gallery and Virtual Machine Connection remain light-only. Switching between creating checkpoints and opening a VM in VM Connection also leaves light screens on display.

Some context on why one app can look so inconsistent: Windows 11 carries a mix of UI frameworks, some dating back to the Windows 7 era, including WebView2, React, WinUI and Win32, each with its own look and behaviour. Windows Latest, which tested the update, questions why Microsoft released it before the dark mode was fully functional.
