THE CRUNCH
Microsoft has patched a bug that made Windows Security wrongly claim Microsoft Defender Antivirus was turned off. The issue was addressed in Defender platform update 4.18.26080.4, released on September 17. The false alert typically appeared at boot or randomly, even with notifications disabled, but clicking it only opened the Windows Security home tab where everything showed as active. Microsoft acknowledged the bug,
Microsoft confirmed the issue on August 28, stating it affected all supported versions of Windows and Windows Server running the latest Defender updates. The company did not name a specific update number, and since Defender updates ship daily, there is no single KB article to roll back to. Windows Insider users reported seeing similar warnings since at least June. TechPowerUp covered the alert when it first surfaced, and several staff members experienced it too. The delay between Microsoft's confirmation and the fix, which was almost three weeks, was notable for a bug this visible.
Why It Matters: A security product falsely reporting its own status undermines user confidence and could lead to complacency. The lack of a single rollback update complicates troubleshooting for administrators who may have blocked mandatory updates through Group Policy or the Registry Editor.
