THE CRUNCH
Microsoft's Bing Wallpaper app has picked up an unwelcome trick: clicking an empty area of the desktop, rather than an icon or menu, now opens Bing.com. The behaviour was spotted by Windows Latest and confirmed by testing, which found it persists even when Google Chrome is set as the default browser.
There is a throttle of sorts. The redirect fires only once every 24 hours, and repeated clicks afterwards do not open further browser windows, which may explain why the reaction has been muted so far.
The loss of control is the sharper point. In 2025, Microsoft tested a similar feature with a clearly labelled setting that let users turn desktop-click redirection off. That option is absent from the latest version, so a daily trip to Bing.com is now simply part of the app.
The app has also reportedly shown prompts urging users to make Bing their default search engine across installed browsers, including when Chrome or another non-Microsoft browser holds that role.
