THE CRUNCH

A modder has created the Tiwaz, an open-source split keyboard that doubles as a one-handed controller. The device features two thumb joysticks and a gasket-mounted case, aiming to blend ergonomic design with gaming utility.

The Tiwaz is an evolution of a DIY project that has become a concrete product. Unlike many ergonomic split keyboards that prioritise comfort over performance, the Tiwaz was designed with gaming in mind. Each half of the keyboard can function as a standalone one-handed controller or macro pad, supporting both left- and right-handed users.

The board uses a split ortholinear layout with 76 keys in total, which is more than the typical 50 to 60 keys found in split designs. It is built with hot-swap sockets for standard MX-style mechanical switches and features a gasket-mounted case, a design choice that adds a degree of softness to the typing experience.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

The project is open-source, allowing the community to contribute to its development and customisation.
