THE CRUNCH
Retro gaming fans with a hacked Nintendo Switch can now play classic Windows titles directly on the hybrid console. A video shows Need for Speed Underground 2 running smoothly, while a forum reports that Quake III and OpenTTD are also playable. The software, known as Wine-NX, is a port of Wine 11 to the Switch's Horizon OS, allowing x86 games to run via Box64's ARM64 dynarec.
Performance varies by title, with NFSU2 managing roughly 20 to 45 frames per second at default detail and OpenTTD capable of hitting 60 fps. WarCraft III is listed as nearly ready, with working menus, campaigns and cutscenes. The software relies on Mesa 20.1's nouveau driver and supports audio, touchscreen and Switch controllers configured as mouse or keyboard.
The Wine-NX project is an experimental homebrew package that translates x86 code to the Switch's ARM64 architecture. Users must run the software on a Switch with custom firmware, meaning an older unpatched console or one with a hardware mod, as the feature cannot be loaded on a standard retail unit.
