THE CRUNCH

Nirva has announced a $25 million pre-Series A round, adding to the $8 million it raised earlier in the year from investors including Lightspeed and South Park Commons, for a total of $33 million. The startup's first product is a jewellery-like pendant, wearable also as a bracelet, that passively listens to the wearer's speech and claims to filter out everyone else. It arrives amid a broader push into ambient AI: Amazon launched a wrist-worn device with Bee, a former Plaud exec started ambient apps company Ambi, and Apple rolled out Voice Intelligence features with its September iPhone launch.

Founded in 2025 by former Meta Reality Labs employees Wei Lyu and Jason Chen, along with Hanying Hu, who founded a fashion and jewellery brand, Nirva wants a wearable that blends in with fashion. The device weighs around eight grams and its battery lasts up to three days per charge. CEO Lyu told TechCrunch it is not a voice recorder or meeting note taker: it is always on, continuously modelling the user, which she framed as the key difference from rivals such as Taya, Vocci and Sandbar Ring.

Privacy is the obvious sticking point for a device that records all day, especially given the unease smart glasses like Ray-Ban Meta have caused for people nearby. Nirva's approach is to have users record voice snippets during onboarding and build its model from those, filtering out conversations and data from other people during use. By default it keeps no audio or transcripts after processing, though before discarding audio it tracks tone, pitch, volume and speed to derive emotion-related insights.

The companion app surfaces inferred patterns about the user's personality, the people around them, places they have been and daily notes, plus reminders and action items. Lyu described the goal as helping users improve self-understanding, self-compassion and self-awareness, citing an example where the app nudged her about forgetting to thank her mother. Nirva positions itself as a personal insights company rather than a productivity startup. The $249 device, in silver, brushed silver, black and gold, opens for orders in November with early shipments targeted by the end of the year, in a field that also includes Friend and Bee.
