THE CRUNCH

NVIDIA has joined the European Commission's AI in Science Enablers Initiative, a shared framework tied to RAISE (the Resource for AI Science in Europe), announced at the AI in Science Summit in Dublin. The pledge covers access to accelerated tools and models, compute and cloud resources, training and technical support, collaborative pilots, and startup and ecosystem support. European Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva framed the campaign as turning ambition into concrete commitments that give researchers the tools and expertise they need.

The open technology component is substantial: NVIDIA says it has released more than 250 open models, 250 open datasets and over 1,400 open source software projects, available on Hugging Face and GitHub. Researchers can build on these with the Nemotron model family and scientific software such as BioNeMo Agent Toolkit, PhysicsNeMo, Earth-2 and ALCHEMI, aimed at biology, chemistry, climate, energy and materials research.

On skills, the NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute has launched an open source courseware hub with freely downloadable, openly licensed materials on accelerated computing and deep learning, with no enrolment, fees or deadline, designed to be adapted for university courses or supercomputing bootcamps.

Compute access runs through national AI factories. NVIDIA is working with facilities in France, Spain and Sweden to open routes for startups and SMEs to sovereign European compute. The BSC AI Factory has run a pilot and is rolling out its first full accelerator program, with other European AI factories reportedly interested in replicating the model in 2027. EuroHPC supercomputing centres such as CINECA and JSC offer free GPU access for open research, backed by office hours, bootcamps and hackathons.

NVIDIA also says 35 supercomputers are currently in development across Europe, which it describes as the largest single-year buildout of supercomputing capacity the continent has seen, intended to serve more than 3 million researchers.
