THE CRUNCH

Modders have successfully run a GeForce RTX 5090 on three standard 8-pin PCIe connectors, bypassing Nvidia's 16-pin power design that has been prone to melting. The team from TecLab stripped a Galax RTX 5090D HOF down to its PCB, soldered the connectors directly to the power regulators and rewired the sense pins to request full power. During a livestream, the card ramped from 400 W to 900 W across the three cables, a

load that would normally stress the 16-pin connector. The modified card held a 3,400 MHz clock and even a single 8-pin connector managed 65 A at 3,100 MHz. The team kept temperatures in check with liquid cooling and passed all tests without any BIOS or software tweaks, suggesting the issue lies with the connector design rather than the GPU itself.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Nvidia may need to address the connector design or officially sanction such hardware modifications to prevent future incidents.
