THE CRUNCH
Minecraft Dungeons 2 launched on Steam with compatibility issues that prevented launch on Linux and SteamOS via Valve's Proton. Microsoft has now confirmed it is working on official support, which will resolve the problem for Linux users. In the meantime, a community member has created a workaround that installs a local stand-in for Microsoft Gaming Services to allow the game to start under Proton.
The game launched to a peak concurrent player count of 32,556, but users on Windows and Linux reported issues launching the title. Linux users were entirely unable to launch the game under Proton. Microsoft has officially confirmed in a Minecraft forum post that it is working on Steam Deck support, which will bring SteamOS and general Linux support via Valve's Proton.
A community member has documented a workaround on a GitHub repo to address the launch failures. The fix involves setting a launch option in Steam and running a script to install dependencies and copy DLL files into the correct location. The creator describes the workaround as creating "A local stand-in for Microsoft Gaming Services so Minecraft Dungeons 2 can start under Proton."
The workaround is not without caveats. The creator notes that it is important to be cautious when pasting commands into the terminal, especially when those commands copy files and run scripts on your machine, as doing so without understanding what they are doing can be unsafe. The fix requires a manual step to run a script with a Microsoft account to cache Xbox tokens.
The community fix has been successful for some users, with one commenter stating that it worked for them with no problems. However, the official fix is expected to provide a more stable and user-friendly experience for Linux and Steam Deck players, removing the need for manual tinkering and dependency management.
