THE CRUNCH

OpenAI has announced a $1 billion initiative called Daybreak aimed at providing subsidised artificial intelligence tools, training and technical assistance to defenders of critical infrastructure. The company has not yet disclosed specific costs or eligibility criteria for the programme.

The initiative, named Daybreak, is designed to help organisations that manage essential services such as power grids, water systems and transportation networks protect themselves against cyber threats. OpenAI will subsidise the use of its frontier AI models, which are the most advanced systems currently available, to help defenders identify and respond to attacks more effectively. The company has not yet released details on how much the subsidies will cover or which organisations will be eligible to participate.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Defenders of critical infrastructure will need to wait for OpenAI to release more details on eligibility and the specific capabilities offered under the Daybreak programme.
