THE CRUNCH
Samsung Electronics has partnered with Mistral AI to integrate the French startup's large language model into its semiconductor operations. The collaboration, announced during a summit in Paris, aims to develop custom on-premises AI models that will improve how chips are engineered and made. By keeping data within its own infrastructure, Samsung seeks to maintain tighter control over its mission-critical technology.
The deal focuses on using Mistral's flagship model, Mistral Large, to build a specialised AI stack for Samsung's factories and design labs. This approach is intended to boost efficiency in semiconductor engineering and reinforce Samsung's position in AI chip technologies. The partnership also emphasises security, as the on-premises nature of the solutions means sensitive data will not leave Samsung's infrastructure.
Why It Matters: This alliance highlights a shift in chip manufacturing where AI is being used directly to design and produce hardware. By keeping data on-site, Samsung aims to reduce the security risks often associated with cloud-based AI tools, which is particularly important for protecting proprietary manufacturing processes.
