THE CRUNCH

A fresh take on the Resident Evil franchise has become the highest-rated video game film on Rotten Tomatoes, with a critic score of 97 per cent based on 91 reviews. The film comfortably beats the previous record holder, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which sits at 86 per cent. This critical success suggests a growing appetite for high-quality video game adaptations that respect source material. The score easily overtakes the

previous live-action Resident Evil series, which had a top score of just 39 per cent. The film is directed by Zach Cregger, who previously delivered the phenomenal Weapons, and has been praised for blending horror, humour, and over-the-top gore in the right ratios. The studio nixed plans for a direct sequel to the 2021 reboot, Welcome to Raccoon City, which was critically panned and grossed just $42 million globally against a $25 million budget. The new film is seen as a genuinely fresh take on a well-trodden fictional world that does not require prior knowledge of the games to enjoy.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

The studio has not yet announced plans for a sequel, but the strong critical reception suggests a green light is likely.
