THE CRUNCH

Ruby on Rails creator David Heinemeier Hansson has announced he has stopped writing code by hand after 25 years. The shift, which began around March 2026, was revealed during a keynote at Rails World 2026. DHH argues that manual coding no longer makes economic sense for most programmers and companies, predicting the change will apply to every domain by the end of the year. He described the transition as the start of a new career for programmers as "professional makers of things" steering AI intelligence. The keynote also touched on the need to rethink software architecture for an era of AI agents.
