THE CRUNCH

Samsung's second fab in Taylor, Texas has reportedly had its entire planned output booked, with AMD taking the bulk of it. The claim comes from an exclusive in Korea's Maeil Business Newspaper citing industry sources, and Samsung has declined to comment, saying it cannot confirm customer-related details.

This is not about AMD's CPUs or GPUs. The Taylor Fab 2 output would be base dies, the logic chip at the bottom of an HBM memory stack, made on a 2 nm process for AMD and NVIDIA, with AMD's orders said to be large enough to stretch the fab's capacity on their own. Samsung plans to pair the Texas-made dies with DRAM produced in South Korea and ship the result as finished HBM.

The timing fits a broader courtship. Samsung's current HBM4 and its sampled HBM4E use 4 nm base dies, so a 2 nm node appears aimed at later HBM generations. The report also follows Lisa Su's October visit to Samsung, where Samsung reportedly sought foundry orders from AMD in exchange for the HBM supply AMD urgently needs. A March memorandum of understanding had already made Samsung the primary HBM4 supplier for AMD's Instinct MI455X.
