THE CRUNCH

Nintendo's limited edition Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 sold out within minutes of preorders opening, prompting scalpers to list the console on eBay for two to three times its retail price. The console launched at $519.99 through major retailers, $20 above the base model, and is now fetching between $700 and $1,700 on the secondary market, with some sellers bundling in the Pro Controller and Ocarina of T

Nintendo's attempt to curb scalping by requiring 50 hours of logged Switch playtime for preorders appears to have failed, as the Zelda edition sold out almost immediately across Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and Amazon. The console, priced at $519.99, is now listed on eBay for as much as $1,700, with some sellers bundling in the Pro Controller and even the upcoming Ocarina of Time remake, despite Nintendo never offering that specific combination at retail.

A full set of the console, Pro Controller, carrying case, and the Ocarina of Time remake would cost around $720 if purchased directly from Nintendo, meaning most scalpers are charging well over double that amount. With the console shipping on October 29 and the remake arriving on November 5, the window for scalpers to profit from the hype is substantial.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Nintendo has not yet confirmed if a new restock will apply the same playtime requirements, but the rapid depletion of this batch suggests a gating system is likely.
