THE CRUNCH
OpenAI has published new results on open problems in mathematics produced by an internal frontier model, sharing Lean proof formalizations and research details on GitHub. The release amounts to a batch of 722 manuscripts covering 372 result families that group related papers, and includes solutions to what the advisory group overseeing the release describes as "hundreds" of open questions.
The model behind the results has not been released. The batch extends a run of AI-driven mathematical breakthroughs that have both impressed and unsettled parts of the mathematical community, while raising questions about research ethics and academic conduct.
To handle communication of the findings, an independent advisory group of elite mathematicians called AGMAI was formed to work on sharing the results responsibly.
