THE CRUNCH
Blizzard has confirmed a new StarCraft game during BlizzCon 2026, ending a franchise drought that began in 2015. The project, led by Dan Hay of Far Cry fame, drops the series' real-time strategy roots entirely in favour of an open-world, story-driven shooter. Set in the Koprulu Sector roughly 70 years after Legacy of the Void, the game is simply called StarCraft and is scheduled for a spring 2030 release. The reveal,
which leaned on cinematics, offered no gameplay footage yet. Blizzard has been upfront that the project is still early in development, leaving details on combat systems and platforms unconfirmed. The shift to a shooter format represents a significant reinvention of the series, which has been quiet since 2016's Nova Covert Ops.
Hay described the game as being fought 'not from above, but down in the mud, in the fire,' signalling a clear departure from the traditional RTS perspective. The studio has not ruled out future entries in the series, but this new direction is designed to bring fresh attention to the franchise.
