THE CRUNCH

Steam is estimated to have generated a record $1.7 billion in September 2026, its best September yet, despite rising PC hardware costs. According to Alinea Analytics, the platform is on track to top $20 billion in annual revenue for the first time, and is closing in on a new record for yearly game releases.

Alinea Analytics estimates Steam had its best September ever, up 13% on the previous September record set in 2025, and its strongest third quarter on record at an estimated $5.5 billion, a 12% year-on-year rise. That puts estimated revenue for the first nine months of 2026 at $16.5 billion, against $14.5 billion over the same stretch last year.

New intellectual property is doing less of the heavy lifting: among the 500 top-grossing games last month, 2026's new IP releases generated 20.5% of revenue, with established IP accounting for 79.5%, including 3.8% from remakes and remasters. Wardogs led the new arrivals with an estimated $86.9 million since its early-access launch on September 10, ahead of Onimusha: Way of the Sword at $30.4 million and The Blood of Dawnwalker at $26.9 million. Free-to-play staples Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends, PUBG and Dota 2 combined for nearly $168 million, almost 10% of the month's estimated total.

The release pipeline is also swelling. Steam had 20,220 game releases in 2026 as of October 1, with another 1,156 titles scheduled for October. If those arrive as planned, the platform would pass the 21,268 games released in 2025. Valve has meanwhile broadened Steam beyond desktops with the Steam Deck handheld, the newly launched Steam Machine for living rooms, and work on extending Steam OS to more devices.
