THE CRUNCH

Bruce Straley, director of The Last of Us, has apologised to the team behind God of War Laufey after his comments about the state of triple-A games were taken out of context. Straley told Edge magazine that he struggled to get enthusiastic about current AAA offerings, describing the verbs and experiences as 'boring', but clarified that his criticism was aimed at the industry as a whole rather than Santa Monica Studio

Straley's comments singled out the upcoming God of War Laufey, praising its pixel-perfect visuals while admitting he was not excited by the gameplay. He argued that the medium risks 'diminishing players' dopamine' by relying on the same verbs for two decades. In a post on X, Straley apologised for dragging the Santa Monica Studio team into the controversy, insisting he was trying to highlight a lack of innovation and leadership at the top of the industry.

God of War Laufey is set for release on February 16, 2027, and follows Faye, Kratos's wife, as she fights through the afterlife of the gods. Straley's remarks come amid broader discussions about industry leadership and creative fatigue, with other directors recently facing scrutiny for their public statements on game development practices.
