THE CRUNCH
Google is rolling out early access to a new integration for Google Home that lets third-party AI agents control connected devices, review camera summaries and access smart home activity using natural language. The move follows a broader trend of opening up smart home platforms to external tools.
The integration uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a standardised way for AI tools to connect to external services. Google Home MCP is available now to a limited number of users, allowing tools like Claude and Open Claw to act on behalf of the user. The company has not yet announced a full public release or pricing.
The development is notable because it moves Google Home beyond its own ecosystem. Previously, users relied on Google Assistant or a handful of first-party integrations. By adopting MCP, Google is aligning with an open standard that could make its smart home platform more compatible with a wider range of AI tools.
