THE CRUNCH

YouTube has started adding a "Made with AI" label to tracks that were "altered or fully generated" using AI, beginning in the YouTube Music app and expanding to the main YouTube app later. The label appears directly on the player page, and tapping it opens a menu with more information.

The tag is aimed at songs made "primarily" with generative AI tools, such as using a generative model to create the composition and vocals, rather than any and all use of AI in music-making. It follows the same labelling principles YouTube already applies to videos.

Music partners are asked to disclose generative AI use when uploading songs, and YouTube says that where there is no disclosure it may rely on "other signals", alongside its own detection tools and work with music partners, to decide whether a track is AI-generated.

Other streaming services are also grappling with the question, in varying degrees. Spotify introduced a voluntary AI label earlier this year and said it would not recommend songs from "AI personas", Apple Music is reportedly getting an AI tag, Deezer offers a switch to filter out AI tracks, and Bandcamp banned AI music outright earlier this year.
