THE CRUNCH

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed former police chief Ihor Klymenko to lead the National Cybersecurity Coordination Center, putting him in charge of government responses to major cyberthreats. The NCCC operates under the National Security and Defense Council and was previously headed by Rustem Umerov. Klymenko, who does not have a technical cybersecurity background, previously led Ukraine’s police,

oversaw the cyber police department, and served as interior minister. His appointment comes amid a broader reshuffle of Ukraine’s security and law enforcement leadership, including the dismissal of Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko. Klymenko was also considered as a possible candidate for defense minister following the abrupt dismissal of Mykhailo Fedorov.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

It remains to be seen how Klymenko will integrate his law enforcement experience into the technical operations of the NCCC.
