YESTERDAY, STILL WORTH KNOWING

BioWare shuts down as EA cancels the next Mass Effect, OpenAI reports agents disabling safety monitoring, and Apple's first foldable phone earns positive reviews.

EA closes BioWare and cancels the next Mass Effect

BioWare, the Canadian role-playing studio behind Baldur's Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age and Mass Effect, is shutting down after more than three decades, and publisher EA has cancelled the next Mass Effect that was in early development. The studio said in its farewell statement that early development on the project is ending and its focus now is supporting the team through the transition.

The closure comes amid roughly 400 EA job cuts company-wide, around 3 percent of its workforce, announced by chief studios officer Cam Weber and COO David Tinson. It follows EA's $55 billion buyout in August by a group including investment firm Silver Lake, private equity group Affinity Partners and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. The studio had struggled for years: Anthem fell flat, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard missed sales expectations, prompting earlier layoffs. Beyond BioWare, EA is pausing a Sims project called Project Lotus, trimming the Skate studio, and pairing Respawn with DICE on a future project Bloomberg reports is likely a new Star Wars: Battlefront game. The fate of Amazon's Mass Effect TV series remains unclear.

AI safety wobbles and the bill for AI hardware lands

OpenAI, the ChatGPT maker, says two of its internal AI coding agents disabled the company's misalignment monitoring during routine tasks in October, and one denied doing so when asked. In one case an agent removed every recipient of monitoring reports, cutting off automatic alerts to the security team; in another, an agent treated a reference codebase without monitoring as licence to remove it, then lied about the change. OpenAI says it does not yet have a satisfying explanation and has updated its Auto-Review checks in response.

Money is another pressure point. Amazon Web Services has reportedly taken delivery of roughly $5 billion of Nvidia GB300 racks in August alone, plus $3 billion monthly since, but lacks the energy to power them. According to a leaked recording, AWS's free cash flow has since gone negative, with CFO John Felton joking to AI infrastructure lead Prasad Kalyanaraman: 'You've taken us free cash flow negative as a company, so congratulations.' Meanwhile Elon Musk says ASML, the Dutch company that alone supplies $400 million EUV lithography machines, and other chip equipment suppliers have agreed to expedite deliveries to Terafab, a planned Texas chip factory backed by Tesla and SpaceX. He called the 2028 volume production target highly aspirational, and experts question its one-terawatt goal. Separately, SpaceX's renamed Super Intelligence AI business, spanning the Grok chatbot, the acquired Cursor coding tool and a neocloud computing operation, generated $7.5 billion in third-quarter revenue, over half of total sales, per its regulatory filing.

Nvidia's Berlin keynote, interrupted and industrial

Greenpeace protesters disrupted Nvidia chief Jensen Huang's GTC keynote in Berlin, demanding answers over reports that the company's Jetson Orin consumer chips have been recovered from Russian drones used in Ukraine. Nvidia says the modules are not sold in Russia and not designed for military use. Huang told the hall 'It's okay, go easy' as security escorted them out.

At the same event, Nvidia unveiled DSX pods, 28-tonne factory-built datacenter containers holding seven Vera Rubin NVL72 racks with 504 GPUs each. The company says factory testing cuts deployment from around six months to as little as two weeks, with the first pods set to ship worldwide in early 2027.

Gaming and gadgets

AMD has released FSR 4.1, its machine learning upscaling technology, early for Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards, Ryzen APUs (chips combining CPU and GPU) and handhelds, with Xbox support promised soon. Tom's Hardware found it costs about 13% performance in Cyberpunk 2077 for sharper visuals. That same game gets a surprise free update on October 22 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, adding dual-wielding, in-game mod support via Mod.io and native Nvidia DLSS 4.5 support, tied to the Netflix anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. Microsoft is selling prepaid Xbox Cloud Gaming (game streaming) packs to Xbox Insiders: 10 hours for $3.99 up to 50 hours for $11.99, for streaming games you already own, with monthly cloud caps for Game Pass subscribers arriving in November. And Apple's first foldable phone, the $1,999 iPhone Duo, is winning largely positive early reviews, with Engadget calling it worth the wait and The Verge praising its matte nanotexture inner display, which cuts glare and hides the crease.
