THE CRUNCH
Marvel's Wolverine was the best-selling new game in the US in September, according to market analysis firm Circana, despite a lukewarm critical reception. The Insomniac action-adventure topped both digital and retail dollar sales even though it launched halfway through the month. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella noted it delivered the highest launch month dollar sales for a Sony-published game since Helldivers 2 in February 2024.
The comparison comes with caveats. Helldivers 2 launched on PC alongside PS5 and cost $40 rather than Wolverine's $70, so it sold more copies to reach a similar revenue point.
The game appears to have lifted console sales too. PS5 led September in both unit and dollar sales, with dollar sales up 43 percent year on year, though Circana notes part of that reflects the console's higher current price. Switch 2 unit sales fell 14 percent, while Xbox units dropped 27 percent to their lowest ever for a September, overtaking the previous record set in September 2025.
September was a crowded month, with eight new releases in the top ten, including NBA 2K27, which dethroned Resident Evil Requiem as the year's best-selling game so far. Circana's next big data points will be October's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launch and November's GTA 6 release.
