THE CRUNCH

A jailbroken PS5 can now stream Xbox games natively, thanks to a homebrew client called PSBox Cloud Gaming. Brazilian developer RafaelNGP released the unofficial Xbox Cloud Gaming app on GitHub, built in part using Claude, and it runs through a homebrew loader such as ShadowMountPlus. Sign-in happens via a code entered at microsoft.com/link, and a Game Pass Ultimate subscription is still required.

The client maps up to four DualSense controllers as Xbox pads, rumble included, and the latest build adds voice chat through the DualSense mic. Streams default to 1080p60, with a 720p option for slower connections and an experimental 1440p mode where Microsoft offers it. The PS5's GPU can also upscale the stream to 4K using AMD FSR 1 or the Anime4K upscaler, though video is H.264 decoded on the CPU, so there is no HDR for now and the bitrate sits around 10 to 12 Mbps at 1080p.

Development is moving quickly. Version 0.5.0, which introduced the 4K upscaling, landed on October 8, and version 0.9.5 followed two days later, adding Xbox Remote Play so owners can stream from a console they already own. Early testers have reportedly hit video problems such as macroblocking and pink artifacts, plus DualSense vibration issues, while others report a good experience.

One caveat worth noting: Microsoft could change or block the services the client relies on at any time, something the developer flags in the project's README. And Game Pass Ultimate subscribers face a shrinking cloud allowance, with Microsoft announcing in September that from November cloud gaming on Ultimate will be capped at 15 hours a month.
