THE CRUNCH
iFixit has torn down Apple's iPhone Duo and given it a 5/10 repairability score, the best the site has ever awarded a foldable, though that is a low bar. The teardown also offers possible explanations for reports of damaged screens and cracking hinges.
On the display, iFixit found a matte nano-texture cover layer that scatters reflections, making the screen easier to read in bright sunlight while also masking the fold crease. Under a microscope, the internal display's oval-shaped subpixels sit at various angles, which the site believes is designed to reduce artefacts along the crease. The nano-texture layer can be replaced on its own without swapping out the OLED underneath, but repairing the display itself remains, in iFixit's words, an expensive nightmare, as with other foldables.
On the durability reports, iFixit suspects the Duo's very complex hinge sometimes does not descend properly. An accordion cable passes over that exact spot, near the edge of the battery, and the site suggests this may concentrate pressure, leading to the audible crack some owners have reported and the broken screens. Apple did not immediately return a request for comment.
Dust did get into the USB-C port, speaker grilles and hinge, but noticeably less of the glow dust made it inside than with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 or Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
