THE CRUNCH

Amazon has taken the wraps off five new Echo devices at a small press event in New York, swapping its usual big autumn hardware showcase for a string of smaller launches spread across October. The new lineup comprises the Echo Show 16, Echo Time, Alexa Photo Frame, an Echo Studio with Home Camera, and a new Echo Dot.

Devices chief Panos Panay explained the format change with a family metaphor: when everything launches at once, "not all your children get enough attention." The staggered October rollout has already covered new Fire TV devices, Kindles, the Alexa Tablet Pro 12, Ring's first smart lock, hardware from AI-wearable startup Bee, and Blink 4K cameras, with further Ring and "Echo on the Go" announcements still to come.

On the software side, the Echo Show 16 will debut dedicated home screens, an interactive 3D map view for smart home control and a meal planning feature, all of which will trickle down to existing Show displays. Panay also said Amazon has "opened up Alexa Plus' brain a little bit more," adding a "deeper research" capability to the generative-AI assistant alongside its usual timers, lights and music.

To handle those longer conversations, a new "Card" interface on Show devices collects each chat, and the same cards appear in the Alexa app and on Alexa.com so a conversation can continue across devices. Panay framed the push by noting that while AI is now everywhere from computers to phones, the home has been harder to unlock.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

Panay teased two more launches still to come this month, from Ring and some "Echo on the Go" news.
