THE CRUNCH

Apple has released iOS 27.2, and the headline change for the iPhone Duo is Apple Pencil support, fulfilling the company's earlier promise that stylus input would arrive on its first foldable later this year. The update also adds an Edge Light feature intended to illuminate your face during video calls, plus dual-camera capture in group FaceTime calls so participants can see both the selfie view and the rear cameras at once.

Siri AI gets the largest share of the update. It can now retain context from past conversations and reference them later, draw on a wider range of sources including voicemails and Messages attachments, and take suggested actions in Messages, such as turning an invitation into a calendar entry. Siri AI also adds French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, though it remains unavailable in Europe and mainland China. A new Excluded Apps option lets you choose which apps Siri, Search and suggestions can access.

Elsewhere, iOS 27.2 brings support for Google's SynthID AI watermark in Photos and Image Playground, according to 9to5Mac, user profiles on the Apple TV app, and a Podcasts revamp that replaces the Up Next queue with a New Episodes list and a Continue Playing section. Apple has also shipped matching updates: macOS 27.2 Golden Gate, watchOS 27.2, visionOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2 and HomePod 27.2, with the Mac and Watch builds carrying much of the same Siri work.

The Pencil support lands at a moment when the Duo's software is still catching up with its hardware. The foldable, launched in September 2026 as Apple's first marquee device under CEO John Ternus, has a 7.6-inch inner display and 5.4-inch outer screen with revamped iOS 27 controls, and major apps such as Netflix, Prime Video and Microsoft Outlook already use the extra space, though some apps still need work.
