THE CRUNCH
A new homebrew project called Playden for PS5 lets owners of jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles sign in with their Steam account and install games from their library directly onto the console. The launcher, adapted from Playden for macOS and hosted on GitHub, does not run the games itself. Instead, each installed title gets its own generated PS5 app, so it appears as a separate tile on the home screen with its files, settings and crashes isolated from the launcher and other games.
Under the hood, launching a game sets up a private Windows environment using prospero-win, a PS5 port of Wine, the compatibility layer that lets Windows software run on other systems. A separate runtime kit handles Wine, the required graphics drivers, the Windows environment and a template app shell.
The results are mixed so far. The creator describes the project as Alpha-stage software, and one tester reported a game that launched but eventually crashed. Another user on the r/PS5_Jailbreak subreddit played Portal without issues, apart from a missing mouse cursor and the ESC key not opening the options menu. The developer lists compatible titles including Cyberpunk 2077, Doom Eternal, American Truck Simulator, Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2.
There are caveats beyond the bugs. A jailbroken console is a prerequisite, and the creator flags that this is an unofficial Steam client. Valve does not support it, and the app notes that any risk from using the launcher "is yours to accept."
