A Delaware proposal to create a new kind of company operated by AI agents has drawn a congressional inquiry. US Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, wrote to Delaware Governor Matt Meyer asking for documents on the state administration's efforts to establish an "Artificial Intelligence Company (AIC)" corporate entity.
In the letter, sent yesterday, Comer argued the plan is ripe for abuse. "We are concerned that Delaware's AIC proposal could be used to protect powerful AI companies and their investors from responsibility for reckless harmful actions, while also protecting non-transparent forces seeking anticompetitive regulatory capture behind state AI initiatives," he wrote. His concern is that if an AI agent rather than a human runs the business, the firm's human owners could evade legal responsibility for reckless or harmful actions the AI takes. The letter seeks assistance obtaining documents related to the proposal; it is a claim from one lawmaker, not a finding about how the framework would operate in practice.
