THE CRUNCH

Nothing will launch its first AI device in December, according to CEO Carl Pei. In a post on X, Pei revealed little about the product beyond one notable absence: it has no screen. "It's a tool, but one built with the personality and care that have come to define a Nothing product. It has no new screen, and it couldn't have been an app," he wrote. The announcement comes just over a year after Pei first outlined plans for "AI-native" devices and an AI operating system.

A teaser image shared with the post shows the word "NOTHING(R)" above an ambiguous black rounded corner, leaving the device's shape and purpose to speculation. It follows recent rumours that Nothing is working on two pairs of AI smart glasses, one without cameras, and is repositioning itself as an AI-first company focused on AI accessories.

If the screen-free route is confirmed, Nothing would join a crowded field of experiments. The Humane AI pin, the Friend pendant and even AI stuffed animals have all tried to make AI useful without a display, and OpenAI is reportedly building an AI smart speaker with Jony Ive. Pei acknowledged the pattern, saying the industry is "hunting for its iPhone moment" with pendants, pins, glasses and companions, before adding his own verdict: "Looking for the iPhone of AI today is a dead end."

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

The device itself is due to be revealed next month, when the shape and features behind the teaser should become clear.
