THE CRUNCH

OpenAI is acquiring Pierre Computer Company, the startup behind Code Storage and a set of open-source developer tools, to improve how Git handles work when humans and AI agents write code side by side. Pierre's libraries already power OpenAI's coding agent Codex, so the deal formalises an existing relationship rather than introducing unfamiliar technology.

Pierre's toolkit covers the everyday mechanics of version control: "Trees" handles fast navigation of project files, "Diffs" shows code changes and lets users fix bugs directly in the diff view, and "Highlights" is a real-time syntax highlighter that keeps up as developers type or an agent generates code. Code Storage stores code and tracks its history through Git.

OpenAI's stated rationale is that as agents handle more tasks in parallel, the tooling around Git has to keep up. The company already runs Pando, its own version control backend built for both developers and agents, so Pierre's tooling slots into an existing in-house effort.

Two practical qualifications: Pierre's open-source projects will remain open source, and the deal still needs regulatory approval before it closes.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT

The acquisition remains subject to regulatory approval, so the deal is not yet closed.
