THE CRUNCH
A developer is taking aim at Adobe's Creative Suite with a suite of seven open source apps that recreate the interfaces and tools of Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign and Acrobat Pro. Brandon Thomas announced the apps on Reddit this week under his Artcraft brand, saying he used Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 to produce "clean-room replacements" for Adobe's closed source software, written in Rust with WebAssembly versions that run in a browser.
Artcraft began last year as a "controllable AI for artists" offering precise post-generation editing of AI-crafted images and videos, before pivoting over the weekend to the Adobe-cloning suite. Free and open-source alternatives to Adobe's software have existed for some time, but Thomas is using AI-powered reverse engineering to mimic the look, feel and functionality of the originals, with the stated hope of eventually reaching perfect fidelity.
Commenters on Hacker News and elsewhere have flagged the software's many current shortcomings. Thomas has nonetheless promised that the current "super early alpha" state will soon lead to something as functional as anything Adobe has produced, a claim that remains untested.
