THE CRUNCH
Valve has launched Personal Calendar on Steam, a new way to keep track of recently released games that match your tastes. The feature, live on the store's homepage, is aimed at filling a gap between players hunting trending or niche titles and those wanting recommendations based on their gaming profiles.
The suggestions work by comparing your recently played titles with those of players who have similar profiles, factoring in logged hours and wishlists. Valve has clarified that briefly trying a game won't skew the algorithm much, since it mostly weighs the games you spend serious time on.
The calendar refreshes daily as Valve retrains its user-specific algorithms with the latest data, but expect gradual change rather than daily churn. New suggestions are more likely to appear over an eight-week window or as developers confirm release dates for upcoming games.
Personal Calendar spent several months in testing and feedback within Steam Labs, Valve's programme for experimenting with store and discovery features. Since then, Valve said players have clicked on more than 2,000 different games through the feature in an average 24-hour period.
The release is part of Valve's broader effort to address feedback that the Steam store feels too cluttered and hard to navigate. Earlier this year, Steam launched a new storefront with a search menu and introduced Categories to help players find games more easily.
