THE CRUNCH

The actor behind Coen in The Blood of Dawnwalker has made the case that generative AI captures only the thinnest slice of what a voice performer actually does. Speaking in a TikTok teaser for an upcoming episode of the My Perfect Console Podcast, Will de Renzy-Martin argued that the sound of a voice is the least interesting part of the job.

"I think the least interesting thing about what I do is the way my voice sounds," he said. "That is really all that generative AI is able to replicate." What AI cannot copy, in his view, is the personality, the choices made in the room and the reasons a director or producer would want to work with a particular actor in the first place.

He also revisited a prediction he says he made four or five years ago: actors are cheap in the grand scheme of things, and anyone using AI to generate "the right noises" would still need someone skilled, and more expensive than an actor, to shape those noises into a performance.

The comments land in a live debate. Rebel Wolves drew some controversy for using text-to-speech tools to plan cinematics on Dawnwalker before hiring actors to perform the roles, though the studio says nothing in the shipped game was created with AI. Embark Studios went further, generating voice lines with AI in The Finals and Arc Raiders, while ElevenLabs has built a business licensing famous actors' voices, with investor Matthew McConaughey set to appear in the sci-fi RPG Exodus next year, using his own recorded performance rather than AI-generated lines.
