THE CRUNCH

A before-and-after photo President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social to show off White House restoration work appears to have been edited with AI. Google's SynthID Detector, which scans images for an invisible watermark indicating content was created or edited with AI, flags the picture as "made or edited with OpenAI."

The image compares an old White House column with a "restored" one, and the tells are fairly plain. The "after" photo has an uneven number of steps on either side of the structure, and the count doesn't match the "before" photo either. The two images are also nearly identical in angle and detail, with the same window reflections and protective cardboard at the column's base, while the freshly painted surface looks unnaturally smooth.

There is a wrinkle: real photographs from June show people painting the front of the White House, so the column may genuinely have received a fresh coat. The White House didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. The SynthID watermark wasn't detected on the other photos Trump posted, which show the White House facade and heliport.
