THE CRUNCH

Xbox may be preparing to scrap Game Pass's familiar three-tier structure in favour of an á la carte system, according to a report from Fortune. Rather than choosing between fixed plans, subscribers would build their own feature set, picking which elements of the service they actually want.

Today's tiers bundle features such as day-one game availability, access to certain online games and their premium features, longer cloud gaming streaming allotments and a larger game library into progressively pricier plans. The report describes the change as a planned "overhaul", suggesting the existing tiers may disappear entirely when the new system arrives.

The pricing implications could cut both ways. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has previously expressed interest in a more affordable bottom end for Game Pass, and a pick-and-mix model could deliver that. The flip side, as the report notes, is that a more "complete" Game Pass experience could ultimately cost more than it does today.
